What would you do?

Put yourself in Frankenstein's position in chapter 17. How would you react to the monster's request? Would you refuse or fulfill the request? Why?

I think that the monster has a legitimate request in wanting a companion, but I think Frankenstein has a legit reason for not wanting to make another monster. He doesn't want to risk having two creatures who go out and destroy everything. I do think though that if the monster honestly wanted someone to go with him to south america Victor should create her. i think he is kind of obligated to now that he created the monster.

I still have to wonder why he doesn't just offer the Monster some tea spiked with cyanide...but we have established that Victor is a wuss.

the monster had a good reason to ask for a friend, but Frankenstein had good reason not to make another monster, if it would have been me, i wouldn't have either, because two monsters is worse than one and they could get into a lot of trouble and do some bad stuff

I agree, I think he should just kill him. Maybe he will try later on. although he wouldn't succeed if he tried we already know from the beginning of the book

I agree that he is obligated to make his creation a companion. About the cyanide... with the improvements Frankenstein made it may not even affect him. He made the monster to be stronger and overall better than him. I don't think he could kill it even if he wanted to.

i feel sorry for the monster. he didn't ask to be created. the least victor could do is create a companion for him. on the other hand victor does have a good reason for not making another monster. it would only cause more problems. i think that victor could solve some of the problems by teaching the monsters instead of abandoning them. the monster by now is just like a human because he can understand people and converse with them. he can read and speak. he taught himself these things. if victor taught the companion the same things then they would be able to leave and victor could forget about them and most likely nothing would happen.

Fair enough...the gunshot did not kill him--it only made him mad. Do you think the monster will go to SA or he will, like Victor fears, keep coming back in search of companionship...

I think Victor is just afraid of making the same mistakes, but what if now that since he has some experience in what he is doing he could quite possibly fix most of the bugs. I also sympathize with Victor in refusing to create a friend for the monster. Look at what the monster has already done, why would he want to risk making another monster to team up with the original monster to cause more chaos?

In my opinion, the Monster deserves to have a friend/bride because he didn't ask to be brought to life. On the other hand, if I were in Victor's shoes, I don't think I would be able to handle the repercussions of "playing God" once, let alone twice.

True the monster has a legitimate request in wanting a companion, but if the female monster can use her own judgement, what if she doesn't like the monster? Creating a new monster would just create more problems that aren't worth the trouble to satisfy the current monster.

On one hand I would be freakin scared that if I didn't meet the monster's request he would kill me. But, on the other hand I wouldn't want to make another creation that could possible help the monster in getting back at Victor.

Frankenstien has a good reason not to create another monster because he doesnt want another monster destroying everything. But he already agreed to making a companion for the monster. So he has to go through with it.
