Nature or nuture

The Monster doesn't like wine, tries to help the family, and feels empathy; yet he killed William. Now--are people BORN evil, BORN good, or made that way?

without a doubt to me people are made that way by the people that influence them...they must be taught to know what good and right is

For every action there is an equal and opposite government program. said...

That's a deep and controversial question...
I believe that people can be both...
I believe that as a child you have a "blank slate" and as time progresses you will become whom you become...
However, there are cases when people can just be wired weird. Whether by genetics or just divine intervention, a child can be born more prone to good or bad.

There are cases when children turn out good when their environment is bad... homeless children surrounded by violence could turn out to be a world savior...

I think that the monster was made that way. i think that he might have the personality of the man who's brain was stuck into him.

You cant create someone or something to be evil. it is how their personality is...

I believe that people are born with the possibility of being either, but it takes outside influence to determine how they are. As far as being around good people and turning out good or vice versa, it just depends on the person and how they react to the world around them. Everybody is unique, so no 2 people are going to react the exact same way when something happens.

I don't think people are ever born good or bad, think that they just become that way. I know from personal experiences that I use to be a little s*** head when I was younger and then I became a lot nicer. Its not that you are born good or bad it is just the way that you live your life and how you react to things

Wait--since think about the monster's response to the family, his innocent dislike of bitter wine, his genuine concern for the family--who taught him that? Certainly not Victor!

I think people learn to be evil by the influences around them. This may not be true in all cases however, a child who lives in a bad environment may not necessarily become a product of that environment. I guess it just depends on the persons belief in what is right and wrong.

well....it depends upon what way you are looking at the situation. It's really a nature vs. nurture issue. I personally believe we are all born evil...that's just coming from a biblical perspective. However, you are greatly influenced by your environment, as well as what you are taught. No one is "made" any more inherently evil than the next man, but it is what you do in life that determines whether you are a good or bad thing for society, or this world in general.

i think that people are born that way, because a child from a bad home could grow up to be the best person ever and someone from one of the best homes could grow up to be a murdering psycho.

People choose the way that they act, so people are not born evil or good. They may be influenced by their environment and choose to be either good or evil. In the monster's case, all he had known since his creation was hate, which was why he became evil and killed William. Once he saw the family and began to understand good from evil, he choose to be good.

Oh, about kids growing up in a bad home, they can choose either to be like their parents, or choose to be good because they don't want to hurt other people. Their decisions of how they want to act create their personality.

People are not born anything...There is no such thing as predestination (Sorry John Calvin). You make choices in everything you do...Granted the Monster was born a "monster", but he wasn't just straight evil...F the idea of predestination...

I disagree chase........

i think that people can be born with a defect on their brain that can make them do dumb-a things, but i don't think that people are actually born with a "bad" gene, and yes i contradicted myself, but i screwed up on my first sentence on the last comment. sorry...

people can make their own decisions but those that are taught right and wrong def. have an advantage

A person's personality is a mix between their genetics and the environment in which they are brought up. Someone who has "bad" parents that is brought up in a good home will probably turn out to be a good person. On the other hand, if someone has "good" parents but is brought up in a bad environment, then they might become a "bad" person. But each of the two different types of people will always have their genetics within, so a different environment is only a cover of their true personality.

well the monster isnt a completely new creature right? maybe he got some of his traits from his "previous life." we dont know what kind of life the person who had his brain last had.

also, i agree with chase, predestination is crap. first why would God create people to go to hell or be bad or good or love him or go to heaven or whatever? wouldnt he get more pleasure from creating people who had complete choice over their lives so they would have to CHOOSE him? certainly he wouldnt want anyone to choose something over him but that comes with the idea of choice right?

Garrett said...

Well predestination can mean a variety of things. There are many different definitions.....for instance "The action of God in foreordaining from eternity whatever comes to pass." Now that doesn't sound so bad. Predestination doesn't mean you still don't have a free will. When I personally think of predestination I think of God already knowing what is going to happen in your life, but you still having the free will to choose how it goes....Most people, however just think of Calvin's original idea of predestination.

wouldn't that fall more on the side of saying God is omniscient? I would agree with you on that if thats what you mean.

I believe that people are born innocent, with the possiblitlity of becoming good or bad. you are taught good and bad. how the child turns out depends a lot on the parents. they must teach them good values and everything or they will end up bad. this is horrible for those kids who are born into families with parents who do not value education or who don't care how their kids end up.

I think that people become what they are by their surroundings. You cant just become pure evil when your bor. People can change. Their influences can change a person drastically.

Garrett said...

Yep thats pretty much what I was going for. I agree God is omniscient.....I think he has it all planned out, so he's "predestined" it, but you have a free will, so I believe we are on the same page.

People are not born evil. It's all about how a person chooses to act in certain situation. In the monsters case, he is a brute with a lot of strength, but he still is at the beginning stages of learning the right and wrong ways to act. When he get made he doesn't have a mommy or daddy to correct him, and maybe he feels that killing is the right way to act when you are mad at somebody.
