I don't know about a soul, but i do believe the monster has a conscience. The monster is able to make its own decisions and act for itself, but was never taught right from wrong since Frankenstein abandoned it.
As of right now I think the book is leading us to believe that the monster doesn't have a soul because lacks judgement, but I also believe that further on in the book we will be able to see that he does have a soul...?
A soul is not something that can be given by man....therefore Frankenstein has no soul. However, a conscience is something from within yourself. It is merely a test of morality.
I think the monster does have a conscience. He has to learn everything for himself. He talks to Frankenstein and tells him how he felt when Frankenstein abandoned him. He definitely knows what is going on.
I think the Monster has a conscience but it's the same type of conscience that a baby has except the baby conscience is in a monster body....the monster still has to learn what is good and bad just like a baby learns in the beginning of his life.
I once read a story about a gorilla that was taught sign language and had a very large vocabulary and would have conversations with its keepers. when they asked the gorilla what death was it said deep sleep, but it also said it was sad when another gorilla died. they concluded that the gorilla had some form of ethical view towards the world but not nearly moral awareness of most 6 years to which its mind was compared. i think the monster is kind of like this, he has some moral awareness, but not exactly a soul.
I think the monster doesnt have a soul because a man cant give you a soul. He does have a conscience because he acts alone and makes decisions for himself.

I am looking forward to sharing Shelly's novel, Frankenstein, with you through this blog. While blogging is fun and creative, please show respect for you classmates' opinions. Bad behavior will result in a written assignment equal to numerous blogging sessions, so do not create any monsters of your own!

Once you have a login, you will be expected to post at least twice for every session in the computer lab. Your post may be a quest ion or response to a classmate's question or reponse.

I will be reading your posts, but I may or may not choose to participate.

i believe that the monster has a conscience, and he knows what is happening, he may not know why or how but he knows

I agree with Jeremy completely
I think the real question is do we have souls?
The question is can you exist without one? What is life and what is death?
Enjoy.

The monster has a conscience... but a soul you can not get by a scientist. the monster does a lot of decisions by himself
