I believe Walton is out there because he wasn't satisfied living a boring lifestyle. He could have been rich, and had fame and glory, but instead he chose to work hard and have a difficult life, which he thought was more rewarding.

Walton went to the north pole to get away from everything and see the natural beauty of the North Pole

Walton feels like he needs to go to the North Pole because he wants to see the natural beauty no one else sees... he speaks of "The Country of Eternal Light"

My Guess would be that he feels the need to separate himself from the world, to better focus on personal tasks.

I think that walton felt that he needs to leave because he was not happy with the quality and the contents of his life. He is fighting through the rough times in hope to get a reward in some way.

Walton is writing to his sister about having this thirst for glory and wealth, which is why he goes to the North Pole. He also writes about the beauty of the land.

Walton's desire for glory will surly come into play later in the book...Dun dun dunnnnnn!

Walton wants to go to the North Pole for many reasons. He wants to take this trip to satisfy his curiosity, to see the North Pole's natural beauty, to do something extraordinary that has never been done before, and to earn fame and glory.

so... everyone agrees, Walton isn't happy/satisfied with his current living conditions, but why? is it sheer curiosity, or is he truely at odds with his hard and fast past lifestyle? what makes his situation so bad? it sounds alright, doesn't it?

I think Walton really is unhappy with his current lifestyle, but we are not into the story enough to really understand why. His life seems fine as it is but maybe it will become better once he ventures into the North Pole...

Walton went to the North Pole in order to escape his lifestyle. He wanted to "find himself" in the North Pole and observe the natuiral beauty that's up there, too.

I think Walton wants to go to the North Pole for many reasons but the main reason is because he wants to get away from everything and see the natural beauty of the North Pole. As we get further into the story I think we will find out some more reasons for his desire to go to the North Pole.

Walton was an annoyed and bored individual...so he did what any other annoyed and bored individual would do. He went to go see the natural beauty of the North Pole

I think Walton is going to the North Pole because he wanted to get away from all the bs that goes along with the civilized world.
